Dating Zippo Lighters

When it comes to collecting Zippo lighters, one of the most important aspects for enthusiasts is determining the age and authenticity of the lighter. Zippo lighters have been around since the early 1930s and have become iconic pieces of American history. The dating process involves examining various features of the lighter, including the bottom stamp, insert, and case.

Bottom Stamp

The bottom stamp is a crucial element in dating Zippo lighters. It contains valuable information about the manufacturing date. Zippo lighters manufactured between 1933 and 1957 have a series of dots, slashes, and combinations of both. Each dot or slash represents a specific year. For example, one dot indicates 1933, while four dots represent 1937. The stamp changed in 1958 to a code system using letters and numbers, and it has continued to evolve throughout the years.

Zippo inserts have undergone various changes over time, and these changes can help determine the age of the lighter. Early Zippo lighters had a flat bottom, while later models featured a rounded or beveled edge. Additionally, the presence or absence of a manufacturer's stamp on the insert can provide valuable clues about the lighter's age.
